Chapter 22

Wisps of fog hung low across the densely forested hills, and a light rain pitted the surface of the river as they crossed the Umpqua. They followed the highway over the nearby hills then down the other side until the road seemed to straighten. Douglas firs formed a towering, narrow, almost claustrophobic corridor on either side of the highway. Eventually, the Siuslaw River lay below them on the right, the marina and fishing docks of Old Town Florence across the river.

“So where’s Charley’s house?” Mac asked. She really didn’t want to seem anxious, but she couldn’t help herself. The others must have felt the same way because nobody made any untoward comments or gave her any of those knowing looks she so feared.

“It’s on Heceta Beach, about ten miles or so on the other side of town,” Peter answered as he checked his watch. “But my stomach tells me it’s a little past time for lunch, so which is it?”

Mac had already said more than she had meant to, and although her stomach was growling also, she kept her silence. Obie gave her a searching look, but she tried her best to simply remain stone-faced. She wasn’t sure if she succeeded but was relieved when her grandfather answered Peter.

“I say we go check on Charley. If we can hook up with him, I think we’ll all feel relieved.”

“I agree,” Jack replied. “Until we settle what’s going on now, we can’t plan our expectorations for the future.” This was greeted with murmurs of agreement. “Hey, Pete. Why don’t you move up here and give me directions to this beach house of Charley’s.”

Peter carefully traded places with Bill, and soon they found themselves leaving the center of Florence. They soon passed a large Fred Meyer store on their left that reminded Mac of a Super Walmart, its foundation holding back the encroaching sand dunes. Another quarter mile and Peter directed Jack to turn left off Highway 101. They passed a large hotel called Driftwood Shores. Beyond the hotel, the beach was visible under a bank of low clouds, the grey-green rollers of the Pacific Ocean breaking up onto the sand.

A short distance beyond Driftwood Shores, Peter motioned, and Jack turned left toward the ocean, crunching down a driveway behind a two-story, brown, weather-beaten house on the edge of the beach.

Peter turned around in the captain’s chair. “Well gang, I’ve only been here once before, but I’m pretty sure this is it.”

“What if you’re wrong?” Obie asked, a mischievous grin playing across his mouth.

“What?”

“What if you’re wrong?” he repeated. “What if this isn’t it?”

Peter seemed to think for a minute. When he replied, a mockingly serious expression adorned his face. “Then we’ll tell whoever is here that Jack is their new home teacher, and we’ll leave.”

“Don’t make me no escape coat,” Jack growled as he turned off the engine.

They piled out of the van, cautiously stretching their legs and their backs, groaning a bit as people do after a long drive. Although
